Recruitment as a Core Founder Skill
Sep 13, 2025
You've mastered product development, distribution, fundraising, and maybe even founder led sales. But recruitment? Most early stage founders treat it as something to outsource.
Recruitment should be a CORE founder skill.
Even if you do outsource later, you’ll never really know who to trust to hire for your company if you don’t understand what good recruitment looks like.
Your early team quality determines your trajectory. They’ll either build your dream product or you’ll mis-hire, burn your runway and have nothing to show for it.
High quality hires get attention from investors, customers, and other potential hires.
Nobody should be able to sell your vision better than you. You’ll also learn a ton about your company, how to pitch it, who your ideal hire is and the culture you’re building when you commit to learning to hire. It's arguably the highest ROI activity for overall company building.
It’s not a distraction from "real work".
The best founders and leaders I've worked with see recruitment as something they ultimately own. They ask me detailed questions, do their own external research and commit time and money to learn this skill.
